WAEC Introduces Resit Exams for Failed Subjects: What Students Need to Know




 

                    



The West African Examinations Council (WAEC) has introduced a new resit initiative, allowing students who failed specific subjects in the West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) to retake their papers as early as January and February 2025. This is a significant policy shift from the previous system, where candidates had to wait for the next available WASSCE for Private Candidates (WASSCE PC) cycle, which could take up to a year.

What is the New WAEC Resit Programme?

According to John Kapi, WAEC’s Head of Public Affairs, this new programme—referred to as WASSCE PC1—provides students with a faster pathway to improve their grades and avoid delays in their academic and career progress. “Students who access their results now and realize they need to resit one or two papers have until 8th January 2025 to register online through our website or at WAEC-accredited internet cafés. The exams will take place from 24th January to 15th February 2025,” Mr. Kapi announced in a press briefing on December 31, 2024.

Statistical Review: WAEC Candidates' Performance Over the Last Decade

A review of WAEC results over the last ten years shows a fluctuating trend in students' success rates. According to WAEC's annual reports:

(i) The overall pass rate (students obtaining at least five credits including Mathematics and English) has ranged between 30% and 55%.

(ii)The failure rate in core subjects like Mathematics and English has been a significant challenge, with failure rates sometimes exceeding 40% in certain years.

(iii) In 2023, 51.2% of candidates passed with five credits, showing an improvement compared to 2020’s 42.3% success rate.

(iv) A significant number of students have been unable to proceed to tertiary institutions or secure jobs due to poor performance in key subjects.

The newly introduced WAEC WASSCE PC1 resit initiative aims to address these challenges by providing students with a second chance to improve their grades within weeks instead of waiting an entire academic year.

WAEC has made registration for the WASSCE PC1 process straightforward. Candidates can follow these steps:
