The Federal Polytechnic Bali has officially launched its groundbreaking Open Distance Learning (ODL) Programme, designed to broaden educational opportunities for individuals across the country. The event, held on Thursday, November 21, 2024, at the Polytechnic’s Library Conference Hall, was attended by dignitaries, staff, and guests. During the launch, the Rector, Dr. Mohammed Usman, represented by the Deputy Rector, Engr. Sani Isa Abubakar, emphasized the transformative potential of the ODL Programme. He described it as a significant step towards equipping a larger segment of the population with critical skills and knowledge, fostering economic growth and personal development. Dr. Usman stressed that the initiative aligns with Federal Government guidelines and reflects the Polytechnic’s commitment to delivering high-quality education. He encouraged prospective students to seize the opportunity and make the most of this innovative programme.
In his remarks, Dr.
Yahaya Tukur, the Director of Academic Planning and Open Distance Learning,
shed light on the core mission of the ODL Programme. He noted that the primary
objective is to make education and skills acquisition accessible to individuals
who have historically been unable to pursue formal education. By introducing
Open Distance Flexible Learning, Federal Polytechnic Bali aims to provide
avenues for professional growth, particularly in response to the demands of
emerging technologies and changing workplace dynamics. Dr. Tukur further
explained that the programme is specially designed for all and sundry
irrespective of where they are or the nature of work they do, both urban and
remote areas, far from the Polytechnic’s main campus. With this initiative,
they can now access quality education without the barriers of distance or
full-time on-campus attendance.
Seamless Application
Process and Unique Benefits
Highlighting the
flexibility of the ODL Programme, Dr. Tukur invited prospective students to
apply for the two-year National Diploma courses. The application fee is a
modest ₦6,000, payable at the Polytechnic’s Consultancy Unit. Admission letters
are issued immediately to qualified applicants, simplifying the enrollment
process. Notably, candidates do not need to pass the Joint Admissions and
Matriculation Board (JAMB) exam to secure admission.
The certificates awarded
through the ODL Programme are equivalent to those obtained through the regular
National Diploma track, ensuring that graduates receive the same recognition
and opportunities. Dr. Tukur also emphasized that students who progress to the
Higher National Diploma (HND) level will be eligible for enrollment in the
National Youth Service Corps (NYSC) program, further enhancing their career
prospects.
Diverse Course Offerings
To kick off the ODL
initiative, the Polytechnic will offer four National Diploma programmes, which
include:
- Accountancy
- Public Administration
- Business Administration and Business
Management Technology (BAM)
- Computer Science Technology
Dr. Tukur assured
prospective students that the curriculum is robust and supported by
high-quality learning materials available in both hard copy and audio-visual
formats. This comprehensive approach ensures that students can effectively
balance their studies with other responsibilities.
The event concluded with
a vote of thanks delivered by Dr. Nnaji Florence, Head of the Office Technology
and Management (OTM) Department. She expressed her heartfelt appreciation to
the Rector, management, and staff for their steadfast support in launching the
ODL Programme. Dr. Florence also extended her gratitude to all attendees for
their participation, wishing everyone a safe journey home.
The launch of the Open
Distance Learning Programme by the Federal Polytechnic Bali marks a pivotal
moment in the institution’s nearly two decades of existence. By leveraging flexible learning models,
the Polytechnic is empowering individuals to gain valuable skills and qualifications
that can unlock new opportunities for personal and professional growth.
For those looking to
further their education and careers while managing other commitments, this
initiative provides a unique, accessible pathway.
